The LTM – the Leipzig Tourism and Marketing team – will be keeping the LZ blog up-to-date with stories from its Leipzig Express city magazine, with some of the key events going on around the city and also news from our sister cities…one of which is Brno in the Czech Republic (a sister city since 1973).

Since 8 May, a new excursion boat has graced the waters of the Brno reservoir bearing the name of ‘Leipzig’ and ‘Lipsko’ along with the city crest on the bow and stern. Inside the boat posters and brochures advertise Leipzig as a great place to visit (of course ;-) ). The naming ceremony and inauguration trip were witnessed by 90 officials and guests from both Brno and Leipzig, and the Czech newspaper, Brnìnský Deník, also carried a four-page Leipzig special.

And, right here in Leipzig, the LTM would also like us to draw your attention to some amazing upcoming festivals this latter half of May. So no excuses for saying you have nothing to do!

Robert de Niro’s waiting…..

12th of May 2010 by Christina

For those of you not familiar with the Bananarama song, I apologise, but it is a classic! The reason for my tacky headline is to draw your attention to the upcoming Leipzig International School’s film night, which takes place at the Schaubühne Lindenfels.

Astrid Pietrus, the lady in charge kindly passed on the all important details…

Taxi Driver by Martin Scorsese, May 19th at 8 pm
starring: Robert de Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybil Shepherd, Harvey Keitel

Martin Scorsese’s movie from 1976 is an absolute classic. It tells the story of Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro), a Vietnam war veteran suffering from insomnia, who is driving taxi at night in New York. On one night, Iris (Jodie Foster), a 12-year-old child prostitute, enters his taxi. She awakes his protective instinct and so he tries to convince her to return to her parents’ home.

further performances in English for Taxi Driver:
15th May, 22.00
16th May, 21.00
18th May, 21.00

And, as Astrid has pointed out, they are also showing another English film at Schaubühne Lindenfels in May:

The Black Dahlia by Brian De Palma starring Scarlett Johansson

19.05.2010, 9 pm
20.05.2010, 8 pm
22.05.2010, 9 pm
23.05.2010, 7 pm

So, two more great movies to check out in May – aside from our other suggestions!
