International artists in Leipzig…..

15th of January 2012 by Christina

The Spinnerei quarterly tours are always a great way to check what’s happening in the Leipzig art scene – and one of our favourite haunts is the Leipizig International Art Programme, which we have written about often in our magazine.   2012 sees a host of new international artists arriving at LIA to spend some time here in Leipzig soaking up the culture and hopefully inspiring new directions for their work.

I met up with two, Turkish artist, Sifa Girinci and Brooke Tomiello, from the School of Visual Arts in New York.  Both seemed very excited to be in Leipzig, and were presenting work at the Winter Tour.  To find out more about these two young artists and LIA check out their websites and the LIA site….

YOU can DANCE in 2012 part one

15th of January 2012 by Maeshelle
Dancing makes me feel good, so I’ve set a New Year’s Resolution to do as much and as many types as I can.  As I find classes and workshops, I’ll do my best to let you know when, where and how much.

Last Saturday I went to Balletstunde für alle at Leipzig Oper taught by Leipzig Ballet’s balletmeister, Roman Slomski. We were a mixed group of various levels and ages. I was happy he laughed with us and not at us as we tried the barre exercises, many of us for the first time ever. It is on Saturday or Sunday and the time moves around a bit, so you might want to keep an eye on the facebook event page. You meet 15 minutes before at the stage entrance and then they come and take you through the labrynth to the Uwe Scholtz rehearsal hall so you can change and get warmed up before the class begins. A bargain at 7€ for 90  minutes.

Before mintrotundschwarz’s Lofft performances of “Benimm Dich!” on Fri, 20 Jan and Sat, 21 Jan, there are workshops exploring the rules of civilization and the grey area between man and animal. It should be an enlightening and rewarding experience (especially if you, like me, find all the rules here a bit much at times). Workshops take place Tue 17, Wed 18 and Thu 19 from 10-11.30 and cost only 7€
